In the Belly of the Whale

I was reading Jonah the other day, and as I was following the story that we've all heard hundreds of times growing up, I got to the part where the guys throw Jonah overboard.

Jonah 1:15-16
Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.

Okay, great. Jonah is running away from God, he is blatantly disobeying Him. God says go to Nineveh, Jonah goes to Tarshish, the absolute other direction. So God sends a giant storm and the sailors are all terrified. After some prayer and discussion and lot-drawing, they decide to throw Jonah overboard. Think about this. You are Jonah. God asked you to go to Nineveh to share God's great love for them and call them to repentance. For some reason you decide that you don't want to go to Nineveh and you head the other direction. While you are on your journey there is a horrible horrible storm and you might all die and the ship might break up. You are sleeping. The sailors were all praying to their gods and nothing was happening, so they wake you up to pray to yours. You all draw lots to see who is responsible for this mess - this storm was so bad there must be a big reason for it. You tell them to throw you overboard. That will calm the storm. They tried not to, in many ways; they made every attempt to save you from the certain death if they threw you overboard. In the end, that's what happened. You got tossed overboard. You are gonna die. 

Jonah 1:17-2:10

Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.  He said: 

“In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry.
 You hurled me into the depths,
    into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.
 I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’
 The engulfing waters threatened me,
    the deep surrounded me;
    seaweed was wrapped around my head.
 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
    the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
    brought my life up from the pit.

 “When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

“Those who cling to worthless idols
    turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
    I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Look at v. 17: God provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah [...]. Wow. Talk about deliverance. I betcha Jonah wasn't expecting that! Keep reading, that whole passage. Especially the first part: In my distress I called to the LORD and He answered me. Clearly the fish here is the answer, the deliverance. (the rest of the passage isn't so much what I wanted to talk about but I put it all there because I just. love. it.)  

When was the last time you were in some sort of trouble? Likely it was not as big as being thrown into the sea to certain death. But whatever it was, you needed some sort of help or deliverance. You prayed to God (or perhaps you even didn't) and He sent you something. Jonah was drowning. Then God sent a fish to swallow him. Wait a second here. This is helping me? What are you thinking God? Now instead of drowning I just have to die slowly inside of this fish. Is this like from the frying pan into the fire? But no. God used the fish as Jonah's deliverance. 

I think sometimes God will use things that we are not expecting to help us. We may even think it is horrible, worse than what we were going through. But look at v. 10: And the LORD commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. Jonah got his life back. God did not let him die in that fish, he sent him back to land. Our God can use anything! He is an awesome God! Don't doubt Him because He didn't send you the kind of help you were expecting! It will most definitely turn out to be the absolute best thing for the situation.

Soak it In

I was listening to this song the other night as I was washing the dishes, and even though I have heard it many many times before, God kind of used it to speak to me again, so I wanted to share it with you.

I was just beginning to make this post and I realized that this is very much connected to Cassidy's last post 'Slow Down'. These days DO go by and they are gone before we know it. So let's take the time to slow down, soak it in, and thank God.

Washing dishes is not something that I particularly dislike but nor is it something that I would choose to do for fun, but why I am I going to grumble about doing it and waste the time? I can NEVER get that time back.

And like it says in the song, 'like a September morning, like snow without a warning, like how the summer feels upon your skin'; I don't know about you but for me it is often very easy to take all those things for granted. 

I decided to enjoy the feel of the nice hot water on my hands. Today I challenge you to find 5 things that you are taking for granted and enjoy them!

Everything for a Reason

I just finished reading The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom, again. This time as I was reading I noticed that there were a whole bunch of really profound things that they said. My personal favourite at this point in time; "Every experience God gives us...is the perfect preparation for the future only He can see.” Doesn't that just blow your mind? Nothing that you go through on this earth is futile, for no reason! Everything that you go through has a higher purpose! Sometimes when tragedy happens, we will say "God must have had a reason for this." And it is true. Even if it is 'just' to give you preparation for what lies ahead. 

I would also like to mention that for those of you who don't know it (although I'm assuming you pretty much all do) that today, April 22, is Cassidy's birthday! As I'm sure you also already know she is such an awesome, sweet, Godly gal! I have known her for just a wee bit under 12 years! So Happy Birthday dear friend!

Now you're wondering how I am going to tie those two pretty much completely-unrelated subjects together. And I will show you. 

When Cassidy and the McCardles moved out west to Calgary (I know it isn't actually Calgary, and we do know where it really is, but we always just say Calgary anyways... :P) two years ago, that was probably one of the two hardest things that had ever happened to me in my life. I lost my Grandma to leukemia in 2007, which is the other of my 'two hard things'. Cassidy was my best friend, we were almost neighbours, all of our parents and siblings liked to hang out; it was like a dream friendship! But then when they moved away, it was really really hard! Sometimes it hurt so bad that it was really hard to see how God could have a reason for it. But we just had to keep trusting that He, the Sovereign LORD, did. 

Looking at it now, I am going to say that I really do wish with all my heart that they could move back. But I don't know what God has in store, either for me, or for them. If He still has more work to do in me, in them, in those around them, who am I to begrudge God's master plan? I just gotta trust that He knows best, and that every experience God gives us IS the perfect preparation for the future only He can see! I don't know what's coming up ahead! I don't know why a lot of things happen to me! Even small things, like a bad day with the sibs, broken glass, God uses those things to prepare you for your future. Doesn't that just awe you?! 

I would like to say, just before I close, that I also do believe that being sinful people with free will, that we can most definitely make stupid choices, leading us to have experiences that were not in God's original plan for us. But I also believe that our God is an awesome God and that like it says in Romans 8, He can work for our good in ALL things: not only the good, but the bad. 

So be encouraged. I don't know what you're going through today. Be it something big like losing someone who was close to you, be it something small like a long day at work, or kids who just. won't. stop. fighting. But whatever it is, God is using it. It is NOT in vain!

Feedburner/email - PLEASE READ

Hello all,
Unfortunately it seems that our feedburner is NOT working :( (if anyone has any techy help please let me know. :)) I am hoping at some point to try and fix it but for right now we have another plan.
We would like to be able to notify people when new posts are made and realized that there is a section in the settings where you can email people. I'm Not Really Sure What to Call this Post... I am not very good at naming things like this... :P

So I have been thinking about this... and for right now I think I can commit to posting twice a week... one more lengthy more thought-out post, and another shorter post; with a song, or some Bible verses... My goal is that Monday will be the longer post and Thursday would be the shorter post... It seems as if we have got the short end of the straw this week, and the long end last week but from now on it should be an equal length...
